History

In 2013, the College completed the construction of a new 20,000 square foot, 4.69 million dollar dining hall on the previous site of Oaks Hall, just south of East and West Halls near the ravine.

Since 1949, the Caddo Center had been the place to eat for Henderson students. However, as attendance increased over the decades, the 350-seat cafeteria became increasingly cramped. The uncomfortable space and deteriorating conditions of the old cafeteria made it apparent that a new one would need to be constructed.

The new cafeteria's design, with red brick, white trim, and white columns, harmonizes well with the rest of the campus. The inside features overhead LED light fixtures, modern tables and chairs, and new appliances. With seating for over 600 people, the large space was designed to meet current needs while accommodating potential future growth. The cafeteria staff also have more room for food preparation and storage.

On February 3rd, 2022, the College held a ceremony to officially name new dining hall after Malachi Smith. Malachi Smith became head cook at what was then Arkadelphia Methodist College in 1903 and, beloved by the students, served Henderson for over 40 years until his retirement in 1947. After the fire of 1914 destroyed the main campus building, Smith and his kitchen staff contributed $25—a substantial amount of money at the time—to help rebuild the college. The naming cerremony coincided with the 108th anniversary of the fire and his gift.
